چکیده

Swing-excited dynamo-induced magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are studied. We investigate the phenomenon of swing excitation with linear and nonlinear 3D numerical simulations of the galactic dynamo. The model includes differential rotation, axisymmetric and isotropic α-effect and uniform eddy diffusivity. The nonaxisymmetry is introduced via large-scale radial and azimuthal velocity components associated with a spiral density-wave perturbation. In a first step we present a linear analysis in order to get insight in basic properties of the swing-excitation phenomenon. Both one and two-armed spiral galaxies are investigated. We find enlarged growth rates for the magnetic energy connected with the parametric resonance conditionΩp ≈ 2ωm (Ωp pattern speed, ωm magnetic drift rate), but only if the amplitude of the perturbation exceeds 10 km s−1. The resonance behavior also appears in the nonlinear regime. The solutions are a mixture of several magnetic field modes. For a two-armed spiral the even modes (m = 0, 2,...) are preferred. The contribution of higher magnetic field modes to the solution is largest if the parametric resonance condition is fulfilled. The field geometry depends strongly on the pattern speed Ωp, the excitation is weakest at the radius where the differentially rotating gas and the spiral pattern are corotating.

Formation and Fragmentation of Gaseous Spurs in Spiral Galaxies

Intermediate-scale spurs are common in spiral galaxies, but perhaps most distinctively evident in a recent image showing a quasi-regular series of dust lanes projecting from the arms of M51 (Scoville & Rector 2001). We investigate, using time-dependent numerical MHD simulations, how such spurs could form (and subsequently fragment) from the interaction of a gaseous interstellar medium with a st...

Circumnuclear Spiral Arms and Starburst Rings in Magnetized Barred Spiral Galaxies

The Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has an extended neutral hydrogen disk, a companion, a prominent bar and a luminous circumnuclear starburst “ring”. Magnetic fields as revealed by nonthermal radiocontinuum emissions correlate well with the optical barred spiral structure on large scales, have a gross enhancement overlapping with the optical/infrared “ring”, and show a trailing swirl around and within...

Moss: Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies

The first hints that our galaxy, the Milky Way, might host a large-scale magnetic field came in the late 1940s, from studies of the polarization of starlight. However, optical polarization is a relatively blunt tool and it was only in the late 1950s that radio synchroton observations began to indicate the presence of large-scale fields (e.g. Gardner and Davies 1966). By the early 1980s observat...

Galaxy Formation by Galactic Magnetic Fields

Galaxies exhibit a sequence of various morphological types, i.e., the Hubble sequence, and they are basically composed of spheroidal components (elliptical galaxies and bulges in spiral galaxies) and disks. It is known that spheroidal components are found only in relatively massive galaxies with M = 10M⊙, and all stellar populations in them are very old, but there is no clear explanation for th...
